ELA costs taxpayers just $2 million a year to run, a priceless investment in understanding the healthy fresh water we all depend on. Yet earlier this year the Harper conservatives announced they were cutting the ELA’s funding as part of the sweeping Omnibus Budget Bill.
Prime Minister Harper’s taxpayer-funded advertising budget now tops a whopping $55 million per year - almost thirty times more than it costs Canadians to run the ELA. Closing the ELA has nothing to do with cost savings, and everything to do with perpetuating the Harper conservatives’ relentless attack on science, research, and evidence.
The planned closure of the ELA would be a travesty for Canadian science, but if enough of us speak out right now we can save the ELA and protect this vital fresh water research.
Send your message direct to the Fisheries, Environment and Science ministers calling on them to reinstate the ELA's vital funding now.
