The tax will raise half a billion dollars to reduce Ontario’s debt and relieve pressure on the poor and middle class.1
An incredible 78% of Ontarians support raising taxes on the rich, including many conservative voters, but we know there will be a major backlash from powerful interests who will try to spread fear and division as the budget passes.1,2
We urgently need your help to show the Ontario NDP and Liberals that Canadians will speak out to support cooperation to reduce inequality. If 5,000 of us sign on, we will deliver a special thank you card from all of us to Premier Dalton McGuinty and NDP leader Andrea Horwath.
The financial crisis of 2008 triggered the deepest recession since the Great Depression. Since then, the wealthiest have grown wealthier while we’ve seen a global wave of austerity budgets that promise to reduce debt by slashing programs and services that the poor and middle classes rely on.
Ontario’s political leaders just showed us that we have a real choice. We can choose fair taxes over damaging service cuts. Let’s encourage politicians to cooperate for the common good, especially when we know they will face strong opposition from powerful interests. If enough of us show support, this could be a turning point for a fair Canada.
Canadians suffer far greater inequality than we did a generation ago. In 1976 the wealthiest 10% took home 31 times more income than the poorest 10%, now they take home 82 times more. We know that more equal societies are happier societies, and that rising inequality is one of the biggest problems in Canada.5,6 In fact, income inequality is rising faster in Canada than it is in the United States.7
It will take hard work and years to reverse that trend and create a more fair society that works better for all Canadians. Ontario’s decision to raise income taxes of the top 0.2% with income greater than $500,000 is a big step in the right direction.
