Just like everyone in Canada, queer and trans people deserve the freedom to be ourselves, to be safe in our communities, and treated with dignity.

May 17th is the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). And this Friday will mark 34 years since homosexuality had its status as a disease removed by the World Health Organization.

Right now in Canada, hate is on the rise — powered by far-right groups and opportunistic politicians who are scapegoating queer and trans people for political gain.

That’s why a new national coalition of queer and trans people are marking this anniversary with a Rainbow Week of Action, to demand our government hold the line against far-right hate. Thank you for sending a message to your MP today to take a stand for queer and trans rights!

Dear MP,

As one of your constituents, I am writing today as part of the Society of Queer Momentum’s Rainbow Week of Action to express my concern about the rise of anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate and hateful rhetoric in Canada. I am proud to live in a country that protects peoples’ rights and freedoms, including 2SLGBTQIA+ people, but the recent rise in queer and transphobic rhetoric and legislation is jeopardizing the equality, safety and rights of these already vulnerable groups.

As your constituent, I urge you to speak out about rising anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate and take meaningful action to advance equality for 2SLGBTQIA+ people, including by listening to 2SLGBTQIA+ people in our community and across Canada.

As part of the Rainbow Week of Action, Momentum has identified calls to action for elected officials at every level of government. I fully endorse these calls to action, and ask you to review them in depth at https://www.rainbowequality.ca/callstoaction.

Specifically as an MP, I urge you to: 
- Publicly condemn the rise in anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate taking place across Canada.
- Speak up in the House of Commons, Council Meetings or Legislature and urge action to advance equality and address rising hate.
- Explore concrete actions you can take to advance equality for 2SLGBTQIA+ Canadians

I also urge you to put pressure on your party and government to take the following actions: 
- Update the Federal 2SLGBTQIA+ Action Plan to strengthen anti-hate measures, 2SLGBTQIA+ economic development and long-term funding for 2SLGBTQIA+ community organizations.
- Work alongside 2SLGBTQIA+ civil society, health organizations, provinces and territories to improve 2SLGBTQIA+ health and well-being, including access to and coverage of gender-affirming healthcare. 
- Implement the 29 policy solutions contained in the White Paper on the Status of Trans and Gender Diverse People.
