This is big. The government’s advisory council on pharmacare just made their long-awaited recommendation: Canada needs a universal, single-payer prescription drug program.

Now, the Liberals are deciding whether or not to adopt the recommendation.

A single-payer system would mean medication will be available based on need -- not on the ability to pay. It means families won’t have to keep making impossible decisions between putting food on the table or paying for essential medication.

But pharmaceutical heavyweights like Pzifer are desperate to block single-payer pharmacare. And they’re gearing up to launch an aggressive lobbying effort with their unlimited budget -- to convince the Health Minister to keep a broken system that protects profits instead of people.

Dear Minister,

I am writing in support of the final report presented by the Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare yesterday. Almost one million Canadians are unable to afford essential medications, while families, businesses, and governments are being squeezed by the rising cost of prescription drugs.

Informed by a wide range of experts, the report is clear that the best way to fix our inefficient, unfair, and costly system is to implement universal, single-payer pharmacare. The report provides a clear path to implementation -- and estimates the long-term cost savings at billions of dollars.

A large majority of the Canadian public supports universal pharmacare, and with the report, the government now has the evidence they need to bring a universal, single-payer program into fruition.

I understand that in the coming weeks, the government will review the report and provide a response. Please listen to the evidence and millions of Canadians, and put forward a robust plan to implement a universal, comprehensive, accessible, portable and public system that will allow equal access to medication, regardless of income.
