We only have days to stop Bill 23.

All signs indicate that the final vote on Bill 23 has been slotted in for this coming Monday. [1] Ford knows the bill is unpopular; that's why he's trying to rush the bill through before we can get organized.

But he’s made one fatal mistake — he’s underestimated the strength and determination of ordinary Ontarians.

Our allies in the legislature have told us that our best chance to stop this disastrous bill is by applying massive pressure to Ford's PC MPPs — so we’ve set up a simple email tool to flood MPs with personalized messages from their constituents, demanding a halt to Bill 23.

We may not know how many signatures, phone calls, rallies, and emails it will take to force Ford to backtrack. But we do know that if it happens, one of them will be the last straw. It could be yours. Will you stand up for the Greenbelt and send your message now?

Hi there, I am writing today about Bill 23.

The aim of the bill is to create more housing supply, which is worthwhile. However, this legislation as currently written looks set to make the problem worse.

The bill has attracted a broad array of opposition. Environmental groups oppose the gutting of green standards while the climate crisis worsens. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture opposes its destruction of priceless farmland. The bill caps affordable housing requirements at 5%, explicitly making the housing crisis worse for the most affected and earning the opposition of housing advocacy organizations. The city of Toronto opposes it on every metric, noting that the bill does nothing to address housing affordability and will transfer money from taxpayers to developers. The Association of Ontario Municipalities even called the bill "radical" and noted that it would raise property taxes. The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario noted that the bill would make air quality, water security, and public health outcomes worse. And of course, Doug Ford himself promised he wouldn't touch the Greenbelt - yet this bill does exactly that.

In other words - this bill will make my life more expensive, my community less healthy, and my taxes more burdensome. It is not surprising to me that it is facing nearly universal condemnation from every quarter of society.

It is difficult for me to believe anyone could expect a bill this slapdash to slip through without people noticing; I can only assume that this is a rough draft that was somehow allowed forward before it was ready. But believe me: I noticed.

As your constituent, I am calling on you to scrap this bill entirely and start over. These issues are too important to get this badly wrong, and I expect better from a sitting government.
