The new Omicron variant — a highly contagious variant of COVID-19 — is leading to a rapid increase in cases across the province. [1] BC is currently lagging behind other provinces with important COVID-19 protection measures. [2] As the BC government fails to respond to this pandemic adequately, individuals are forced to shoulder personal responsibility for systemic failure.

BC residents, especially front-line workers, are being asked to personally protect themselves by wearing masks. The catch? N95 masks, which experts say is one of the safest masks against Omicron, are not only difficult to find but have become increasingly unaffordable for low-income, front-line workers. [3-4] A single N95 mask can cost up to $8 at Canadian Tire. [5]

As front line and healthcare workers put their health at risk to serve British Columbians, they deserve adequate protection from the virus.

So here’s the plan: we’re going to build a huge petition to show the BC government the public demands better protections. But with infections increasing daily, we need to act fast. [6] Sign now and tell the BC government to provide free and accessible N95 masks for all healthcare and front-line workers, including teachers.
