Recently, the Senate Finance Committee took the first step toward a guaranteed livable basic income. Senators started studying Bill S-233, which would develop a framework for a regular, no-strings payment to everyone in Canada who needs it.¹

Those of us who have been struggling with the day-to-day impacts of the rising cost of living can easily see how important a basic income is to build a fairer future where everyone has what they need to live a decent life. But for this legislation to pass, we need to show decision-makers just how widespread support is – and how urgently we need this bill.

It’s time to address the root causes, rather than the symptoms, of systemic poverty.

That’s why I'm asking you to support Bill S-233 and establish a national framework for a guaranteed livable basic income. Research shows that basic income could lift millions of people out of poverty, while boosting the economy by as much as $80 billion a year. Basic income trials and pilots have been successful in the past, leading to improved economic, social, and health outcomes.

There is no time to delay. At a time when so many are struggling to meet their basic needs, establishing a guaranteed livable basic income would provide critical support. It's a common sense solution and one that I hope you will prioritize moving forward. I urge you to pass Bill S-233 - An Act to develop a national framework for a guaranteed livable basic income - without delay.
