Late Monday night – after hours of debate and last-minute amendments – an NDP motion for Palestine passed in the House of Commons.

On many counts, this motion is a strong step forward. It endorsed an end to arms exports to Israel – a measure advocates have called for since the conflict began last October. It reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to work toward a two-state solution, a ceasefire and the release of all hostages.

The bolder points of the motion brought forward by the NDP – like the call to recognize Palestinian statehood – were watered down by the Liberals. And the motion is non-binding, meaning there’s nothing to stop the federal government from sweeping an arms embargo under the rug.

I’m writing to express my appreciation for your support of Monday’s motion regarding Palestine.

On many counts – including calling for an end to arms transfers to Israel, and reaffirming the need for a two-state solution – this motion is a significant win for all of us who want to see a just peace in Israel-Palestine. But the unchecked violence continues against innocent civilians, 70% of whom are women and children, continues – and Canada can and must do more.

In its revised form, Monday’s motion doesn’t specifically call for a two-way arms embargo and avoids explicit mention of non-lethal weapons, which means their sale could continue unimpeded. and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly said recently that Global Affairs Canada would not stop military exports that have already been approved - meaning that the flow of military equipment to Israel will continue virtually uninterrupted.

This motion also doesn’t recognize Palestinian statehood – something 139 of 193 UN member states have already done.

I am grateful to you for supporting the NDP’s revised motion – but the work is just beginning. I urge you to keep up the fight for Canada to deliver an airtight arms embargo on future and pre-existing permits immediately, and recognize Palestinian statehood.
