Our allies are telling us that the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB), which was passed to address the disability poverty crisis, may not be funded until 2025.¹ Current disability benefits are not meeting the rise of inflation, which is why the federal government decided to pass CDB in the first place.

This alongside rising costs of living is exacerbating the day to day struggle of people with disabilities, and making a difficult living situation nearly impossible.² The fall economic statement is being announced this week, and if the federal government is waffling we need to force their hand.

If thousands of us email Kamal Khera, the new Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland before the fall economic statement, it could convince them to fund the CDB now.

In 2021 the Liberal party's platform included a commitment to address the disability poverty crisis through the Canada Disability Benefit. The platform named the stark reality that over 1 million Canadians with disabilities live in poverty, and on average earned an income of $12,520, well below the poverty line.

That was nearly three years ago, and the disability poverty crisis has only worsened, with rising inflation exacerbating the cost of living and housing crises. It is harder than ever for people with disabilities to pay rent and feed themselves, let alone pay for additional critical medical costs, and your government has yet to fund solutions.

Currently there are at least 1.4 million disabled people living in poverty in Canada. People with disabilities deserve to live with dignity, independence and autonomy and we need decision makers who will lead the charge in implementing and funding solutions to the disability poverty crisis.

You had an opportunity in budgeting decisions around the fall economic statement, to provide an update and commitments to fund the Canada Disability Benefit with the urgency of the disability poverty crisis in mind.

Over 15,000 people have signed a petition calling on you to fund the CDB. And 89% of Canadians support lifting disabled people out of poverty. As a concerned Canadian I am calling on you to commit to fund the Canada Disability Benefit now, without delay. Do not let the disability community wait any longer.
