Dear Minister Freeland,

I’m writing to you today to urge you to use Budget 2023 to implement an excess profits tax on oil and gas companies and make them pay their fair share into the public purse.

The IPCC report on climate change came out yesterday. With UN Secretary-General’s warning that “the climate time bomb is ticking”, we must act now before climate change irrevocably harms our communities.

Oil and gas companies are experiencing record profits off the back of sky-high gas prices. The report shows that adaptation measures taken now can effectively build resilience, but more finance is needed to scale solutions. Big Oil has a responsibility to pay their fair share. A windfall on excess profits would help fund the transition from fossil fuels.

You’ve said that you want to make sure this budget supports hard working Canadians. A windfall tax will help put money back into the services and infrastructure we need to serve the public good, instead of the lining the pockets of corporations.

As you decide the 2023 budget, I call on you to include a windfall tax on oil and gas corporations.
