As Loblaws continue to rake in record profits, their latest “innovation”: receipt check scanners.

New scanners preventing shoppers from exiting unless they scan a receipt, are creating confusion, bottlenecks, and a unjustified sense of embarrassment for Loblaws customers.

Loblaw executives have more than doubled their profits since the pandemic – while increasing grocery prices by 22.5% since 2020. Instead of increasing surveillance on customers, Loblaws executives are the ones who deserve to be in the hot seat.

CEOs don’t often hear from the general public. And Loblaw CEO, Per Bank is still new in the role and trying explicitly to avoid being in the public eye. But if thousands of us flood his inbox, we can turn the pressure up to repeal the receipt check policy and send a message that Canadians expect Loblaw to deliver on a greater priority: affordable food prices.

Dear CEO of Loblaws, Per Bank,

I am writing today regarding new machines that have been instituted at the self-check out of a number of Loblaws affiliated stores and Loblaws’ receipt check policy, urging you to rescind both.

Not only are receipt checks a legal gray zone, they also leave the door open for increased surveillance, which too often results in racial profiling and harassment of customers who are visible minorities.

Statistics Canada has shown that food prices have increased by 22.5% since 2020, and 1 in 3 Canadians believe that this is due to grocery stores, such as your own, price gouging.

Despite claims that this is due to supply chain issues and inflation, the Canadian public is not fooled. We see that Loblaw retail profits have more than doubled from levels typical pre-pandemic, while Canadian food bank usage is the highest it’s been since 1989.

Loblaw should be concerned about the reputational damage it continues to cause in driving up food prices and instituting policies that will inevitably result in harassment - driving consumers elsewhere.

I urge you to rescind the Loblaws receipt check policy and the new receipt checking machines immediately, and turn your focus to driving down food prices to make groceries more affordable.
