In just a few hours London City Council will vote on whether or not to use ranked ballots in the 2018 municipal election. If it passes, London would become the very first jurisdiction anywhere in Canada to get rid of first-past-the-post.

Canadians are used to first-past-the-post: municipally, provincially and federally. But if cities like London begin to use ranked ballots, it will break the ice on electoral reform, and open the door to bigger reforms like proportional representation at the federal level.

We think we can win this, but it’s far from a done deal. Opponents of change are known for using scare tactics and misinformation to convince municipal councillors to vote down electoral reform. But if enough of us come together to shore up support for the motion, we can counter this campaign of fearmongering and make history on electoral reform.
