Dear Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers,
 
We are in the midst of a global climate emergency. As such, it is crucial that the irreversible climate impacts and potential harm caused to local communities by expanding tar sands production are weighed against any perceived benefits.

The Frontier Mine will make it near impossible to meet Canada’s climate targets: Over the course of its 41-year life-cycle, the mine will emit approximately six megatonnes of carbon emissions (CO2e) per year. When combined with oil sands projects already operating, in construction or approved, the Frontier mine would bring total emissions to 167 megatonnes CO2e, which would exceed Alberta’s 100 megatonnes emissions limit on oilsands greenhouse gases. [1]
 
The Frontier Mine will also harm local communities and violate the rights of Indigenous peoples. The Joint Review Panel found that the mine would result in “significant adverse effects” on the rights, land use and culture of local Indigenous peoples. [2]

The mine is not economically sound. Economists have flagged the significant financial risks associated with the mine and indicate that it will never be financially viable due to its reliance on unrealistically high oil prices. [3, 4]
 
Expanding tar sand production is incompatible with Canada’s climate targets. I call on you to reject the Teck Frontier mine and commit to investing in secure jobs in sustainable industries instead.
