A damning report from Ontario’s Auditor General confirms what we’ve long suspected. A few chosen developers received “preferential treatment” to hand-pick 92% of the land that Doug Ford’s government removed from the Greenbelt.¹ Now, those developers stand to make $8 billion from that land.²

Doug Ford’s plan to strip 7400 acres from the Greenbelt hurts everyone except these wealthy developers. Developing former Greenbelt land will destroy essential farmland, habitats, and natural areas, threaten 29 at-risk species, and drain public resources for what will be unsustainable and unaffordable housing.^3,4,5

In response to the explosive report, Ford said his government would implement 14 of the 15 recommendations made by the Auditor General.⁶ The one recommendation he won’t accept? To re-evaluate the decision to change the Greenbelt boundaries. In other words, he’ll do everything short of righting his wrongs.

The damning report is all over the headlines and Ford’s government is in the hot seat right now. Will you send a message to Ford and the ministers responsible, calling on them to implement the final recommendation, and restore the land removed from the Greenbelt?

I’m writing to you today about reversing the decision to end protection in Ontario’s Greenbelt for farmland, forest and wetlands for the financial benefit of developers.

It’s clear from the newly-released Auditor General’s report that the process through which Greenbelt lands were opened for development was faulty, and subject to undue influence from developers.

The Housing Affordability Task Force’s report, commissioned by the provincial government, demonstrated that there was no need to open the Greenbelt for development to meet the government’s goal of building 1.5 million homes over the next 10 years.

Significant flaws in the selection process, assessment criteria, rushed timeframes and lack of consultation were all highlighted, and showed that environmental and agricultural concerns of Greenbelt lands were not addressed.

But most damning of all was the fact that two developers directly provided information to the Housing Minister’s Chief of Staff on parcels of land which ultimately comprised 92% of the 7,400 acres removed from the Greenbelt, at an increased land value of $8.3 billion.

I’m calling on you to follow the recommendation of the Auditor General to re-evaluate the 2022 decision to change the Greenbelt boundaries. Your government must reverse the removal of farmland and natural areas from Greenbelt protections.
