A damning report from Ontario’s Auditor General confirms what we’ve long suspected. A few chosen developers received “preferential treatment” to hand-pick 92% of the land that Doug Ford’s government removed from the Greenbelt.¹ Now, those developers stand to make $8 billion from that land.²

Doug Ford’s plan to strip 7400 acres from the Greenbelt hurts everyone except these wealthy developers. Developing former Greenbelt land will destroy essential farmland, habitats, and natural areas, threaten 29 at-risk species, and drain public resources for what will be unsustainable and unaffordable housing.^3,4,5

I’m writing to you today about protecting farmland, forest and wetlands in Ontario. From the Auditor General’s newly-released report, it’s clear that the Greenbelt land swap was designed to benefit developers. As your constituent, I’m asking you to call for reversing the Greenbelt plan.

In 2018, Doug Ford said, “Unequivocally, we won’t touch the Greenbelt.” He repeated this promise over and over while in office. In June 2022, you were elected under the assumption that the Progressive Conservative Party would protect the Greenbelt and all of its farmland and natural resources.

That promise was broken. And now the Auditor General’s report makes clear that the Greenbelt land swap was influenced by a select few developers, who received “preferential treatment” during the process.

The damage done by Bill 23 and the land swap will increase sprawl, destroy Ontarian agriculture, put more people at risk of flooding, and make our lives less affordable.

As my MPP, I’m asking you to call for the reversal of the changes to Greenbelt boundaries made last year. I urge you to speak to your colleagues – Premier Doug Ford, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Graydon Smith, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks David Piccini, and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Lisa Thompson – and call on them to accept the Auditor General’s recommendation to re-evaluate the 2022 decision. Your government must make this right by restoring Greenbelt protections to the lands removed.
