Enbridge Gas are opposing a new ruling to protect you and your energy bills, and Doug Ford introduced legislation – Bill 165 – to let them to continue to profit.¹

In December, the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) ruled that Enbridge Gas can no longer force existing gas payers to subsidize new gas hook ups. Now, Doug Ford is trying to reverse it.

Bill 165 isn't good for homeowners, energy bills, or the environment, and must be stopped.

I write to you extremely concerned about Bill 165 – which would reverse the Ontario Energy Board (OEB)’s decision to end subsidies for methane gas pipelines to new residential developments.

The OEB’s decision to end the gas pipeline subsidy was made based on detailed evidence and a thorough process. Passing legislation to override that decision would trample the OEB’s independence as an arms-length independent body and is a gross overreach.

Ending the subsidy would not slow or halt construction, as stated by this government’s press release. Costs could be lowered and timelines sped up by forgoing new gas hookups, and instead installing heat pumps and induction stoves. This would benefit new home buyers by lowering energy bills, lowering carbon emissions, improving indoor air quality and health outcomes for children, seniors and other residents.

Letting the OEB’s decision stand would support all Ontarians by lowering energy bills for existing gas customers, encouraging cost-effective development decisions and save money for new homebuyers.

This Bill shows that the Ford government has no interest in actually ensuring affordable, sustainable energy bills for Ontarians. The opposite - it will increase our bills.

I urge you to speak out against Bill 165 and let the OEB decision stand.
