The Conservatives have been holding back pivotal legislation that would see the first necessary steps towards a sustainable future for Canadians.

The Sustainable Jobs Act (SJA) passed second reading in the House of Commons last October. Since then the Conservatives have done everything in their power to keep it from moving forward – going so far as to filibuster for 27.5 hrs, and raising 20,000 amendments to a bill that is only 18 pages long.¹ The bill is currently off the reading paper, tangled in red tape, with no sign from the Liberals of prioritizing it’s passing.

The Conservatives think they can bully their way to burying the SJA and destroying hope for movement towards a sustainable future for Canadians. But we won’t let the bullies win.

If thousands of us email Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister Wilkinson demanding they bring back the Sustainable Jobs Act and vote to pass it, we may be able to make it a reality.

I am writing to you to express concern over delays to the reading and passing of the Sustainable Jobs Act. In October you tabled the Act, to help protect and usher in new jobs in the energy industry as Canada tries to maintain a strong place in the clean energy transition.

Despite assurances that the legislation holds paramount importance for your government, it has yet to be scheduled for a third reading. Given the limited number of sitting weeks remaining in Parliament before the Summer recess, I worry that this delay may impede its achievement of Royal Assent in time to begin the mandated work before the next election.

It is incumbent upon the government to honour its commitment made in 2019. The ramifications of the lack of energy transition are already manifesting nationwide, with raging wildfires, and ever increasing devastating climate events affecting Canadians from coast to coast.

Further delay could prove detrimental to workers and their families, as they wait to transition to new jobs, ahead of the transition towards a more sustainable energy future. Members of Parliament are urged to transcend political considerations and enact this vital legislation.

I urge you to retable Bill C-50, the Sustainable Jobs Act, and to vote in favour of its passing.
