I'm writing to you today to urge you to levy an excess profits tax on oil and gas companies and make them pay their fair share into the public purse instead of taking from it.

A recent investigation shone a spotlight on the successful lobbying done by Big Oil to win $2.6 billion from the public purse. This is unacceptable.

The price of extraction hasn't risen, so these corporations are raking in billions as gas prices spiral and they're torching the planet while doing so. But everyday people are being forced to make impossible choices between putting food on the table and filling up their gas tanks.

The UK government implemented a 25% excess profits tax on oil and gas companies and I'm asking you to follow suit. Bill C-31 implemented a 15% tax on banks and insurance companies with the Canada Recovery Dividend, so we know you have the means to implement a tax on Big Oil's runaway profits. With that revenue, we could invest in a just transition away from fossil fuels, shore up our crumbling healthcare systems, and make life more affordable for everyone.

It's time oil and gas companies paid their fair share into the public purse. Your duty is to constituents not to lobbyists and corporations. I urge you to levy an excess profits tax on oil and gas companies.
